Citizenship in the United States is obtained principally by either being born in the U.S. or by the process of Naturalization. The requirements for the process of Naturalization are set forth in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) sections 312 through 336. A person may also obtain U.S. citizenship by being born to U.S. citizen parents overseas or derive it from parents who naturalize.
